A Note To Site Users

Hello, all. I wanted to inform you that this site, VSDB-Students, will still be on Tripod, but there will be a shortened URL that will direct you to this site instead of my name. Don't worry, you will still be able to find it on Google. I am making another site, Blind World, which will feature several resources all in one place.

We are working to get this in development as soon as possible. We would like to know what alterations, if any, you would like to see in this site? Posted by: Site admin on 10/26/12

Welcome to VSDB's website, where individuals can have the splendid opportunity of viewing history, sports, clubs, and current news that students attending VSDB participate in.   For Jaws users, each item will appear on the navigation bar, but in addition, there will be a graphical link that will take you to the same destination.

VSDB, or the Virginia School For The Deaf And The Blind, has an interesting history.  There have been mysterious reports of paranormal activity.    Also, on the steps of Main Hall, there is a bloodstain that refuses to vanish.  In order to learn more, please visit the history page, where you can explore several different items such as who attended VSDB, when the school officially opened, and more.  For Jaws users, there will be a graphic above this information.

VSDB Sports

GoalBall

VSDB has several different sports to choose from.  For the blind department, two sports are played.  These include goalball and track.  A sport's page will appear on the navigation bar, as well as a graphic, which will act as a link.  Jaws users can either navigate with the quick key H, use links list (insert plus F7), or use G until you hear Jaws describe the graphic to you.

Current News

  • Please read about the newlaw below that could affect the Deaf and the Blind!
  • VSDB Makes History Again, is it good or bad?

For several months, there has been immense speculation over a law, that if signed, would allow ASL (American Sign Language), to become an elective credit that a student could pursue to obtain a foreign language requirement in place of other dominant languages such as Spanish, German, and Japanese to name a few. On May 23, 2011, Governor Bob McDonald signed this bill into law. Students anxiously awaited the arrival of the governor at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind near the steps of Main Hall. Nancy Armstrong, hoping to capture publicity from this new law and what it means for the school presided over the main ceremonies. She stated that she thought that the law was a great idea, since it gave students an opportunity to enroll in an ASL class. However, I am not in favor of this law at all. First of all, only those who are visually impaired, which means that they possess some light perception, are able to participate in the ASL class. However, a blind individual, such as me, who is experiencing a moderate to moderately severe hearing loss, would not be able to benefit from the class. This law needs to include TSL, or Tactile Sign Language, so that this class can also be accessible to the blind. I urge everyone who sees this document to write to Congress, stating that the blind would enjoy equal access to sign language classes the same way that the deaf learn the language with some adaptations. This is the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind, and I for one do not anticipate the merging of the two schools to prove successful unless the blind and the deaf cultures can be equal. I sincerely hope they can. In the meantime, I am frustrated at the new law! This is just another way for the school to obtain publicity, but not advocate for the blind population at the same time. So the question that was initially posed at the beginning of this article is this good or bad. That depends on how you look at the situation!
